Traditions and Family

So, it's fall now. Well here in the mid-west, it cannot decide whether it's still Summer, or Fall. In any case, it's October, and last I checked, that is Fall time. Which means Pumpkin spiced latte's, boots over jeans, and caramel apples are totally in. I still haven't rotated my wardrobe, since it's still going from low 80's to mid 50's day to day (layers are key here)...either way Autumn/Fall is when our family begins one of many yearly traditions.

Every year on October 1st, I decorate for Halloween/fall. Every.Single.Year. My husband used to look at me a little side eyed and wonder why I would even bother, especially when our middle was fairly new, and my oldest was then almost 11. This October I was quickly and excitedly reminded why...

After sending my little sweet kindergarten kiddo off to school, I went home and dragged out boxes of decorations for Halloween. I put up the bats, the skeletons, and all the little towels and spooky whatnot's to celebrate the whole month long. While my sweet girl was very skeptical of the skeleton on the front door, my Kindergarten kid returned home ELATED to see all the fantastical reminders of his very favorite holiday. He entered the house and screeched with joy, "I know what this means, this means HALLOWEEN IS COMING UP!". He was extremely excited when he saw that his room had also been decorated for him. (It is his favorite holiday, so of course I did)

That's all I needed to hear to remind me why I drag out those boxes full of old and tired decorations year after year. For the littles, it's a statement that a long anticipated and sometimes forgotten holiday/celebration is approaching. A reminder that some things never change, even if the seasons still do. We immediately had to make a countdown chain for the excited Kindergartener, since he has kept asking "How many sleeps until Halloween?"...another tradition. It is important to our family to continue these things so that we are reminded of simplicity and togetherness. As I type this, my husband is currently in the kitchen rolling out sugar cookie dough to cutout halloweenie shapes for the kids to decorate with frosting and sprinkles. I am sure those are going to turn out Pinterest worthy....or not. It really doesn't matter, the kids enjoy it, and so do we.
